Getting to the Workshop LocationThe workshop will be held at the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, UK. The Royal Holloway campus accessible by several modes of transportation. By AirRoyal Holloway is served by three airports: London Heathrow (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW), and Stansted (STN). London Heathrow (LHR)The airport is located approximately 8 miles from the Royal Holloway campus and presumably is the most convenient for reaching the venue by air. Taxis are available from Heathrow airport, but black cabs can be expensive; it is better to book a local taxi in advance; fares should be approximately GBP 20 in the latter case. Local taxi companies include (in no order of preference):
The Railair bus to Feltham runs every 15 min; from there Egham is 10 minutes by train. Combined tickets are available from the Bus and Coach Information desk in the Arrivals hall of each terminal. Another option, though less preferable, is to take bus number 441 (destination Englefield Green and Windsor) which runs from Heathrow Central to the College approximately every hour. For details call the Heathrow Traveline: +44 (0) 990 747 777. London Gatwick (LGW)The airport is located south of London and is approximately 38 miles away from Royal Holloway. Travel distance by car is at least one hour, this may be substantially more owing to traffic. Taxis are available from Gatwick airport, but black cabs can be expensive; it is better to book a local taxi in advance; fares should be approximately GBP 50 in the latter case. Local taxi companies include (in no order of preference):
Stansted (STN)This airport is located to the northeast of Greater London and is approximately 70 miles distant from Royal Holloway. We do not recommend flying into this airport as the time and cost of traversing all of London is rather unattractive. By CarThe College is on the A30, 19 miles from central London and about a mile south-west of the town of Egham. It is 2 miles from junction 13 of the M25 (London Orbital). After leaving the motorway take the A30 west, signposted to Bagshot and Camberley (this is the Egham by-pass). At the first roundabout, take the second exit; at the second roundabout, again take the second exit and continue on the A30 up Egham Hill. The College is on the left at the top of the hill. There are footbridges across the road at the pedestrian and main entrances.By TrainThere are frequent services from London Waterloo to Egham (35-40 minutes); Woking to Egham (35 minutes, change at Weybridge) and Reading to Egham (40 minutes). Services at weekends, especially those on Sunday, are less frequent than on weekdays. Train links to the rest of the country are available via the London stations or Reading. Eurostar services to mainland Europe also operate in and out of London Waterloo. The College is just over a mile from Egham Station, about a 20 minute walk. Turn right out of the station along Station Road and walk about 100 yards to the T-Junction and the traffic lights. Turn left at the junction and follow the road up to the large roundabout; go left up Egham Hill. The main College entrance is on the left immediately after the second footbridge.By BusThe following buses stop outside the College: London & Country buses 441 (Heathrow to Englefield Green), Bee Line 41 and 43 (Staines to Slough or Maidenhead), Westlink 417 (Hounslow to Windsor). There is also a College bus service, which runs between Egham railway station and the campus. The College bus, like the taxis, leaves from the main car park adjacent to the station. For more details visit the bus service schedule. At RHULThe workshop will be held in the Queen's Building; please refer to the campus map to locate building 35. Note that there is no on-campus parking readily available! Please follow the signage for first-come first-served parking if you do come by car. Hotels and Accommodations
About Egham, UK and Surrounding AreasIn addition to the spectacular Founders Building and the Founders Gallery, the surrounding areas are also interesting to explore. Despite being part of the University of London, Royal Holloway has a large park-like campus and is located near the small town of Egham, Surrey. It lies in Runnymede Borough, which was the site of the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 A.D. A small memorial commemorates this important event. The 35 acre Savill Garden, situated on the southeastern edge of Windsor Great Park, contains an outstanding collection of flowers, trees and shrubs. Windsor Great Park itself is a vast area of parkland and forest, starting with the Long Walk at the gates of Windsor Castle, and stretching as far as Virginia Water. In total it covers 4800 acres, although not all is open to the public. Highlights of the Park include the Long Walk, built in 1688, which follows a straight path from the Castle to the statue of the Copper Horse on Snow Hill, and also Savill Garden and Virginia Water. Windsor Castle is also nearby, it is one of three official residences of The Queen and has been home to the Sovereign for over 900 years. Egham is of course close (approx. 40 minutes by train using the direct link between Egham and Waterloo Station) to London, so a visit to London may be another alternative. The official web site for Londonhas listings for attractions, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and other information. |
